Goal casts a jovial eye back over some of the most amusing and peculiar moments of the season that deserve a little more air time
Phew. It's over. The leagues are wrapped up, cups have been won and lost and Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have to wait a few months before they can start equalling and breaking new records week in, week out.
So after a whirlwind few weeks of official accolades being picked up – with a bit of Fifa corruption on the side, of course - we felt it was time to take a breather and look back at some of the more light-hearted, bizarre and intriguing parts of the season.
After all, football is a funny old game.
WORST PLAYACTING
Plenty of footballers have made a career out of playing the hard man role - hell, Vinny Jones landed himself a tidy career in the film industry off the back of his brutish escapades on the field. But it's the other end of the acting spectrum where players really fall down (and fail to sell said fall).
Fans of Real Madrid and Barcelona like to poke fun at one another by arguing that Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar never miss an opportunity to hit the deck, but this season both players are nowhere near the worst offenders in the playacting department.
To illustrate, we first take a trip to MLS. Columbus Crew centre-back Giancarlo Gonzalez was fined for "embellishment" back in April following an incident involving San Jose Earthquakes captain Chris Wondolowski. Gonzalez unceremoniously bulldozed the striker onto the ground with a shoulder-barge, but when the Quakes captain returned to his feet to question the Costa Rican over his actions, the defender hit the floor with both hands clutching his chest, similarly to how one might collapse after being shot with a high-powered rifle.
Sometimes it's warranted, however, like when Martin Demichelis fell to the floor, hands on face, after taking a big Belgian elbow to the head in an aerial challenge with Marouane Fellaini. When referee Mike Clattenburg came to investigate, however, Demichelis sprung to his feet, temporarily putting pain to the side until his anger was vented. Baffled and amused, Clattenburg couldn't help but chuckle at the Argentine. Make your mind up next time, Martin.
Now to the greatest piece of play-acting of the season, which, undoubtedly, has to go to Leeds United's Adryan. Derby midfielder Johnny Russell lightly caught the Brazilian's foot during a dribble, but taking the foul just wasn't enough for the attacking midfielder. Landing face down, Adryan deemed his subsequent dramatic 360-degree roll of pain an insufficient reaction to the minimal foul, opting to then launch himself back into the air “like a fish out of water” before taking a well deserved breather.
