Abia AG donates foams to prison inmates

UMUAHIA-WORRIED by dearth of facilities in the prisons, Abia State Attorney-General and Commissioner, Chief Umeh Kalu, SAN, has  donated 100 pieces of foams to the State Prisons Command.

Making the donation, Chief Kalu said he was aware that the prisons in the state are overstretched, especially after the recent security crisis when some members of IPOB were arrested, charged and remanded in the prisons.

“I am aware of the challenges, and I had some interventions in the past but more needs to be done,” he said.

The Attorney-General who said he made the donation on behalf of his family, noted that the last clash between members of IPOB and soldiers swelled the numbers of prison inmates in the state, which further stretched the prisons’ facilities.

According to him, in the criminal justice, the inmates need to enjoy a little comfort, as they are still innocent till convicted.

“They are human beings and by the law of our land, they are innocent until they are found guilty. They should have a place to rest their heads,” Kalu said and appealed to individuals and organisations, including churches to assist the command with items to alleviate the challenges.

He said that the inmates should be taken care of “so that when they come out, they will not come out with much bitterness.”

Receiving the foams, the state controller of prisons, Mr. Sylvester Ayoku expressed joy over the donation, saying the items would help them to face their challenges.

“There are too many people in the prisons, it has over carried its capacity, Government has a lot at hand, so we run to individuals,” Ayoku said, and called for more assistance.
