Champions League top scorer targets more goals
Idris Adesina
Enyimba striker, Mfon Udoh, has promised
to score more goals next season after finishing as top scorer in the
2016 CAF Champions League and at the same time being shortlisted for the
African Player of the Year (based in Africa) award.
Udoh scored nine goals in the Champions League to emerge as the highest goalscorer of the competition.
The Nigeria forward told our correspondent that he never doubted himself, despite his challenges in the Premier League.
“It’s an awesome feeling for me to have
two recognitions on the continent – to be named among the nominees for
the CAF awards and also winning the Champions League’s the top scorer
award – it is something I never saw coming this season,” Udoh said.
“I never thought I would be nominated for the CAF award. The credit for the two achievements goes to my teammates.
“The award is a motivation for me to continue to do more and always hope for the best in my career by scoring goals.”
The striker’s nine goals, which all came
in home matches, helped Enyimba reach the group stage of the
continent’s biggest club competition for the first time since 2011.
The People’s Elephant struggled in the
group stage, managing just a win over eventual champions, Mamelodi
Sundowns. Enyimba then finished 10th in the Nigerian topflight.
Their failure to impress in the CAF
Champions League, the Premier League and the Federation Cup left them
without a trophy this season.
Udoh said, “It was not the best season
for us as a club because it could have been better if I was able to
return to the continent next season to defend the Champions League
award.
“But that does not say that we have
totally failed as a team. Some moments are like that. We can only work
harder and come back better than this next season.”
