Chibok Girls: NUT warns FG against broken promises

Folashade Adebayo
The Nigeria Union of Teachers on Thursday urged the Federal Government not to renege on its promises of scholarships, rehabilitation and employment to the recovered 21 Chibok Girls.
Speaking in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Thursday, the NUT President, Mr. Michael Alogba-Olukoya, advised against abandoning the girls, adding that it would hinder the process of reintegrating them into the society.

He cited the case of Ese Oruru, the teenager who was allegedly abducted and impregnated in Bayelsa State by Yunusa Haliru, one of her mother’s customers,  in 2015.
At a court hearing on Tuesday, Ese’s mother, Rose, had complained that Ese and her baby had been abandoned by the government.
But commenting on the 21 Chibok schoolgirls who were recently released by Boko Haram, Alogba-Olukoya advised the government to provide necessary services and opportunities to rehabilitate them.
He said that failure to deliver on the promises made might result in disillusionment.
“We are watching events and we don’t want the Federal Government to renege on its promises to the girls. The government should ensure that all the scholarships, employment opportunities, rehabilitation and counselling services are provided for the girls. We don’t want them to be abandoned like Ese Oruru, as alleged by her mother. We owe the girls another new lease of life,’’ he said.
