EFL Cup: Tottenham out as Liverpool, Arsenal, Newcastle advance
Daniel Sturridge scored twice as Liverpool knocked out Tottenham from the EFL Cup with a 2-1 win at Anfield on Tuesday.
Both
teams made changes — 21 in total — with Spurs captain Eric Dier the
only man to have played for either side at the weekend. Youth was the
order of the day, with Trent Alexander-Arnold making his Reds debut, but
it was the experienced Sturridge who pounced to tuck home the opener in
the ninth minute.
Liverpool
doubled their lead in the 64th minute as Sturridge raced through onto a
ball that split the defence from Georginio Wijnaldum to slot through
Michel Vorm’s legs and into the net.
The
hosts gave Spurs a way back into the match when Lucas felled Lamela
from behind with a clumsy tackle in the box and Vincent Janssen made it
2-1 from the spot in the 76th minute.
Tottenham
then had a chance to equalise but Shayon Harrison miscontrolled a long
ball and failed to get his shot off, and Liverpool hung on to progress.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain netted a brace as Arsenal saw off Reading 2-0.
Arsene
Wenger also fielded a young team against the Championship side,
including Emiliano Martinez in goal in place of first-choice Petr Cech,
while Olivier Giroud returned from injury to make a substitute
appearance.
Oxlade-Chamberlain
opened the scoring for the Gunners in the 33rd minute, powering a
right-footed shot past Reading’s Ali Al Habsi to give his team the lead
ahead of half-time.
And
he scored his second in the 78th minute when his well-hit, first-time
shot from just outside the penalty area took a deflection and found its
way into the net to effectively put the tie away.
Mike Phelan won his first game since being named permanent Hull City manager in a 2-1 victory at Bristol City.
Defenders
Harry Maguire and Michael Dawson both headed home following corners on
either side of half-time to put the Tigers through.
Lee Tomlin pulled a goal back for the hosts deep into stoppage time, but it was too late for an equaliser.
Aleksandar Mitrovic and Mohamed Diame both scored twice as Newcastle cruised to a 6-0 win over 10-man Preston North End.
The
Serbia international headed home following a set-piece to open the
scoring before Alan Browne saw a straight red card for elbowing Jack
Colback.
Diame
soon doubled Newcastle’s lead with his first goal for the club and Matt
Ritchie added a third from the penalty spot after fending off pleas
from Mitrovic to take it, but two minutes later Mitrovic walked the ball through the box to score his second of the night anyway.
Diame
added a fifth three minutes from time with a fine strike from distance
following a long run, before Ayoze Perez capped the scoring in stoppage
time.
Leeds United beat Norwich City on penalties after a 2-2 draw after extra time.
Alex
Pritchard opened the scoring before Marcus Antonsson levelled things
and it stayed that way to force extra time. Nelson Oliveira struck what
he would have thought was the winning goal, but Chris Wood got Leeds
back into the game again to send the match to penalties.Leeds
won 3-2 from the spot as Ronaldo Vieira struck after Marco Silvestri
stopped Pritchard, Steven Naismith and Robbie Brady’s efforts.
